"North part of the city" at that time was not very far north: A Seattle Department of Neighborhoods context statement for Queen Anne describes Mercer as homesteading "320 acres north of [today's] Mercer [Street] up to present-day Highland Drive, between Lake Union and today’s Queen Anne Avenue," so basically the east part of Lower Queen Anne and Queen Anne Hill, from Mercer street (just north of Seattle Center) in the south to Highland Drive. A Seattle Public Library image of the house shown here places it at "Roy St. and Taylor St. [now Taylor Avenue]", near the southeast corner of that homestead, a block north of today's Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters.
