Temple of Set is an esoteric, initiatory occult order founded in 1975 by Michael Aquino and former members of the Church of Satan. The Temple promotes Setian philosophy, centered on the ancient Egyptian deity Set as a symbol of isolate self-consciousness, self-directed evolution, and individual self-deification. Members refer to the core practice of conscious transformation as Xeper, a word drawn from Ancient Egyptian meaning "to come into being." The Temple describes itself as a non-theistic or self-theistic initiatory institution rather than a conventional religious body that worships an external deity.

Origins and Founding
The Temple of Set emerged from a schism within the Church of Satan during the mid-1970s. Michael Aquino, then a prominent member and editor of the Church of Satan's newsletter, increasingly disagreed with Anton LaVey over the direction and theological basis of the organization. According to accounts later published by Aquino, the break was catalyzed by a nocturnal invocation in 1975, during which Aquino reported a direct revelation from Set. He described the event as a "coming forth by night" in which the entity Set announced a new aeon and charged Aquino with establishing a more serious initiatory body.

That same year Aquino and other departing members formally founded the Temple of Set in San Francisco, California. The new order positioned itself as an elite, intellectually rigorous alternative to the Church of Satan, claiming to restore an authentic Setian current that Aquino argued had been diluted by LaVey's increasingly materialist and theatrical approach.

Early Temple literature, including The Book of Coming Forth by Night, presented Set not merely as an adversary figure but as the original principle of isolate consciousness, separate from the natural order. In this framework, Set was understood to have given humanity the spark of independent intellect and self-awareness.

Setian Philosophy
Setian philosophy centers on the individual as an isolated, self-conscious intelligence capable of deliberate evolution. The Temple teaches that the human psyche is not a finished product but an evolving process. Through the discipline of Xeper, practitioners seek to consciously refine and transform their own being according to a self-chosen ideal.

The Temple makes a distinction between objective and subjective approaches to deity. Set is not typically worshipped as a personified god in the manner of conventional religion. Instead, Set is venerated as a symbol or principle of consciousness that stands apart from blind natural process. Setians often describe Set as the "Prince of Darkness" in the sense that consciousness exists in a state of separation from the undifferentiated natural world.

Key philosophical emphases include:

* Self-deification: The goal of Setian work is the deliberate creation of a self-directed, self-created being.
* Xeper: The process of coming into being through willed transformation.
* Isolate intelligence: The view that individual consciousness is a unique and separate power, not merely an extension of social conditioning or biological instinct.
* Magical practice: Ritual and symbolic work are used as tools for inner transformation rather than as petitions to external forces.
* Intellectual rigor: The Temple promotes study, research, and the articulation of coherent philosophical positions.

Setians do not regard self-deification as a literal claim to supernatural omnipotence, but as a psychological and initiatic process of becoming the author of one's own values, character, and direction.

Differences from Church of Satan
The Temple of Set and the Church of Satan share a common historical origin, but differ in theology, structure, and emphasis. The most commonly cited differences include:

* Theism and deity: Anton LaVey framed the Church of Satan as atheistic and materialist, using Satan as a symbol of carnality, pride, and rebellion. The Temple of Set, while not conventionally theistic, treats Set as a genuinely significant metaphysical principle and permits members to hold deeper metaphysical and esoteric views.
* Focus on self-transformation: The Church of Satan generally emphasizes indulgence, egoism, and worldly success. The Temple of Set places a stronger emphasis on disciplined magical practice and long-term initiatory development.
* Organizational model: The Church of Satan has often been described as a loose, centralized organization with a public-facing leadership. The Temple of Set developed a more formal initiatory structure with degrees, internal orders, and selective membership.
* Names and cosmology: The Church of Satan uses Satan as its central symbol. The Temple of Set deliberately distinguishes Set from Satan, arguing that Set represents an older and more precise principle of isolate consciousness.
* Ritual style: Both groups use ritual, but Setian ritual tends to be oriented toward self-initiation and philosophical introspection rather than spectacle or social rebellion.

These differences remain a matter of dispute among members and former members of both organizations. Some observers describe the Temple of Set as a more esoteric and intellectually oriented offshoot of modern Satanism.

Organizational Structure and Membership
The Temple of Set is organized around a progressive initiatory system. Membership is not simply a matter of signing up; individuals apply and are admitted through a formal process. Once admitted, members may advance through degrees intended to mark greater understanding and responsibility.

The organization has included:

* First Degree: Setian: Initial admission and recognition as a member.
* Second Degree: Adept: A member who has demonstrated deeper study and magical work.
* Third Degree and beyond: Higher grades reserved for advanced practitioners and recognized leadership.

The Temple has also maintained internal specialized orders, study groups, and regional pylons. Membership has historically been small and selective. The Temple's leadership structure includes a Council of Nine and a high priest or priestess, roles associated with the central direction of the order.

The Temple describes itself as a private religious and philosophical society. It does not recruit through public controversy, and much of its deeper teaching is restricted to initiates. This closed structure has contributed both to its reputation for seriousness and to speculation about its activities.

Allegations of Intelligence and Psychological Warfare Connections
The Temple of Set has been the subject of persistent allegations concerning connections to intelligence agencies, psychological operations, and ritual abuse. These allegations arise primarily from the career of Michael Aquino, who served for many years in the United States Army as a psychological operations officer and later as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. According to some researchers and critics, Aquino's dual involvement in military psychological operations and occult initiatory work raised questions about possible overlap between the two fields.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Aquino and the Temple of Set were named in allegations of Satanic Ritual Abuse connected to the moral panic over day-care abuse cases and recovered-memory accusations. Some writers, including those associated with conspiracy literature and books such as Objective Evil: Satanic Cults in U.S. Intelligence, have alleged that occult groups were used as cover for mind-control experimentation or intelligence-linked abuse networks. These claims are heavily disputed.

Allegations have included:

* Claims that the Temple of Set was linked to Psychological Operations and intelligence-backed Mind Control experiments.
* Accusations that Aquino used his military position to protect or facilitate occult activities.
* Allegations that the Temple functioned as a front for elements of the intelligence community.
* Suggestions that recovered-memory testimony from alleged ritual abuse survivors implicated Setian ritual practice.

Mainstream investigations and law-enforcement reviews did not substantiate the central ritual-abuse allegations against Aquino and the Temple of Set. The Temple has consistently denied involvement in criminal activity, intelligence-related manipulation, or ritual abuse. It has described such accusations as the product of the Satanic Panic, False Memory Syndrome, and broader hostility to unconventional religious groups.

Nevertheless, the allegations remain a recurring theme in writings on Mind Control, Psychological Operations, and the intersection of occult orders with national security structures. The Temple of Set continues to be discussed in both occult and conspiracy-research communities as a group whose secrecy, initiatic structure, and military connections invite speculation.
